Breastfeeding

You will spend much of your time with your baby feeding.  Whether you decide to breastfeed or bottle feed, there are many things that can help make eating time a bit easier.  If you are breastfeeding then you will want to look into a good breast pump so that you can express extra milk or prepare bottles of breast milk for your baby when you are not available for the feeding.
However, you may not always know your pumping needs until the arrival of your baby.  As I was planning on being at home with my daughter, I originally bought a manual breast pump thinking I would only be pumping occasionally, at the most once a day.
However, my milk failed to come in properly and nursing specialists recommended that I pump at least 5 times a day after each feed following a 7, 5, 3 schedule.  Seven minutes on one breast, then seven minutes on the other breast.  Then five minutes on one breast and five minutes on the other breast.  Finally, three minutes on one breast and three minutes on the other breast.  This was to encourage the milk to come in.  But, trying to do this with a manual pump was too much and I ended up renting a high power electric pump which allowed me to keep up with this arduous pumping schedule.  Working moms who need to pump on the job will also want explore the option of an electric breast pump.  Wait and see what your specific pumping needs will be.
You will also want to learn more about breast milk storage like special freezer safe breast milk storage bottles or breast milk bags.  And don’t forget a good pillow for supporting your baby while feeding, and of course something sturdy for your back.

Bottle feeding

Choosing the right bottle for bottle feeding your baby is important.  However, it is not always possible to know which bottle will be right for your baby.  Every baby is different.  You may need to try a few different bottles before you find the right one for your infant’s needs.
In her first few months, my daughter had lots of problems with gas after eating.  In an effort to ease her pain, I tried three different bottles before I finally found one that seemed to help her problem.  This bottle had lots of extra parts for washing but I didn’t care since it allowed my daughter to eat with the least amount of gas.  An extra minute of washing up didn’t matter.  Experiment with different bottles until you find one that works for your baby.  But, make sure your bottle, and any plastic tools used for feeding your baby, are BPA free.
Also, always check that the nipple of the bottle is properly in place creating a tight seal against the plastic.  If not, extra air will enter the bottle causing your baby discomfort.  In addition, watch out for bottles that leak.  Having a bottle drip all over your baby during feeding is a nightmare.

Formula And Baby Food

Whether you are just supplementing your usually breastfeeding schedule or if you choose bottle feeding as your baby’s one and only method of feeding, choosing the right formula is an important decision.  You want to make sure that the baby formula you decide on provides the right amounts of vitamins and minerals that your baby needs to grow and be healthy and you also want to make sure your formula comes from a reputable brand that follows strict safety standards when manufacturing the formula.
Just as when choosing the right bottle, you can never know which formula best will agree with your infant until you try it.  When I originally began feeding my daughter formula I choose one of the best and reputable formulas on the market.  However, my daughter suffered painful bouts of gas and often ended up throwing up her entire bottle.  After switching to another brand of formula, in addition to changing bottles, much of her pain and discomfort after feeding receded.  Don’t be afraid to experiment.
