Formula
Choosing a good formula for your baby is an important decision. Make sure that you choose the right stage of formula for your baby’s age (stage one is usually for babies 0-6 months, stage two for 6-12 months, etc…). Also double check the ingredients in the formula to ensure that your baby is receiving the correct amount of vitamins and minerals and that nothing your baby needs for optimal health is left out. Consult with your pediatrician for advice. However, the formula you choose may not be the right one for your baby. You can never know. What may be the perfect formula for one baby just may not agree with another. You may need to experiment with different formulas until you find one that doesn’t cause your baby too much gas. However, always check with your doctor before changing your baby’s food.
Baby Food
Between four and six months in age your baby will begin solid food. At first he/she will only begin to taste certain foods, and will still rely on the breast or the bottle for the majority of his/her nutrition and calories. However, soon enough the bottle or breast will become a thing of the past, probably only used in the morning and night, and your baby will begin to eat the same foods as you. It’s always a good idea to begin feeding your baby only one food at a time. This helps to pinpoint any allergies your baby may have. If your baby responds to the food well, then introduce another new food into your baby’s diet. Every week you can add a new food.Start with bland and non-sweet foods. Try rice cereal, pureed cooked carrots or mashed avocado. Only later introduce sweeter foods like mashed banana, apple puree or sweet potato. If you introduce the sweet foods first then your baby may never want to experiment with blander foods.
Eventually you can begin feeding your baby whatever you prepare for yourself. Invest in a good baby food grinder or a baby food blender so that you can create your own baby food just using the food you already have prepared for the rest of the family.
Feeding Accessories
One of the most important feeding accessories you will need is bibs. One thing you can almost always count on when feeding your baby is that some of the food and/or liquid will end up on your baby’s front. Protect your baby’s clothing by using a bib. Soft cloth bibs work great for babies still breast or bottle feeding. You can also use them to wipe your baby’s mouth. Consider investing in a plastic, easy to wipe bib for babies eating solid food. You can even purchase bibs with front pockets to catch any food that misses your baby’s mouth. A great way to keep the floor clean. Also get some great information about the best food storage containers, baby plates, baby bowls and baby utensils. Also check out our reviews on baby sippy cups.
