My Two Cents

I was given both sleep sacks and swaddle blankets at my baby shower.  I tended to use the swaddle blankets more frequently than the sleep sacks just because my daughter often woke herself up flailing her arms about.  Swaddle blankets contain the arms where sleeps sacks do not.  However, when my daughter got older and no longer wanted to be swaddled I switched to the sleep sacks and they have been great.  No complaints.  I also love using them as stroller blankets when taking a walk on a cold winter’s day.  My daughter always kicks her regular stroller blanket off herself causing the blanket to fall to the ground and the stroller to run over it.  This makes the blanket dirty and leaves my daughter exposed to the cold weather.  Now I just bundle her up in a sleep sack and a jacket and she is all set for a stroll.

My Two Cents A friend of mine gave me the Aden Anais Swaddle Blankets as a baby arrival gift. I love them. I have used them as lightweight blankets on hot summer nights, as sun shields over my stroller on hot, sunny days (they still allow great air flow into the stroller), and I have used them as soft play blankets on the grass–I just pull the swaddle blanket off the stroller where it was working as a sun canopy and throw it on the ground so that baby can lie around and get some tummy time. In fact, I have used these swaddle blankets for everything but swaddling. But, I am sure they would be good for that too. My Two Cents

I don’t think I would have survived my daughter’s infancy without these swaddle blankets. My daughter constantly flailed her arms about in her sleep which would then startle and wake her. It became impossible for her to sleep for more than twenty minutes at a time, which of course was not enough rest for her or me and we both became quite cranky. When she was about three weeks old I began using the Summer Infant SwaddleMe Adjustable Wraps. My daughter began sleeping for eight hours straight during the night—sometimes awakening for a quick feed but falling right back to sleep in her swaddle blanket. I couldn’t believe it. I would just wrap her in the swaddle when I knew it was time for her to go to sleep at night or have a nap during the day and then feed her while she was wrapped up in the swaddle. A few times I would test to see what would happen if I tried to put her to sleep without the swaddle and she would always wake up within twenty minutes. She just couldn’t sleep well without being swaddled. I only was able to finally get her to sleep soundly without swaddling her when she was a bit over five months old and began to sleep on her stomach.
Using the Summer Infant swaddle blankets are extremely easy. You just put baby in the leg pocket, fold one side over the right arm, then fold the other side over left arm—attaching these sides to Velcro panels built into the blanket—and baby is swaddled. It is very simple. I recommend every new parent to have at least 2 or 3 of these swaddle blankets (baby spits up a lot at this young age and things end up in laundry very quickly) to help your new baby fall asleep peacefully.

What is crib bedding?  Crib bedding consists of anything you will need for inside your baby’s crib like crib sheets, crib bumpers, crib blankets, etc…. Many companies sell crib bedding sets that include matching sets of all these things.  For a bit extra you can even find matching lamps, laundry hampers and wall hangings to complete your nursery’s coordinated look.  
You can also buy items of crib bedding separately to create your own unique look.  You can choose a patterned or neutral crib bumper and then sheets to match.  Even if you buy a crib bedding set you will still need to purchase some extra crib sheets since most crib bedding sets only come with one fitted sheet for the crib.  You will need 2-4 crib sheets for your baby’s crib depending on how often you do laundry.  You’ll definitely need one clean crib sheet always ready and waiting at all times in case your baby spits in the crib (and it happens).  You will also need a waterproof crib sheet to protect the crib mattress.  These sheets are placed on the mattress under the fitted crib sheet and are usually left in place (not changed or cleaned) unless a major accident happens that requires clean up.

They’ll Remember It Always

Baby blankets don’t only serve a practical purpose (keeping your baby warm) but also often play the role as a comforter.  Like a favorite stuff animal, baby blankets are hard for children to let go of and often stay with a child well into adulthood.  Honestly, how many of you went off to college or wherever, still carrying your baby blanket?  You would be surprised to hear just how many probably answered yes. With this in mind, choose your baby’s main baby blanket carefully as this may become a very important item in his or her life.

How Many Blankets Do I Need?

You will need more than one baby blanket.  You will want at least one main thick blanket that will be used at home on cold nights when the baby is sleeping.  You will also want some thinner blankets for warmer nights.  Then you will need some blankets for the stroller (and careful because baby’s tend to kick these off during a stroll causing you to run-over the blanket with the stroller before you even realize what happened.—Needless to say you will then need to wash the blanket).  You may also want a separate blanket for the car and perhaps some thin blankets for helping to block out the sun over the stroller on bright days (but make sure you haven’t completely blocked the airflow into the stroller, especially on a hot day.  This could cause the temperature in the stroller to rise to dangerous levels.) Blanket Safety

You need to be careful when using blankets with babies.  As their hands learn to grab and pull at things they can grab and pull the blanket up over their face and head.  While babies seem perfect this technique quite young, it is not until they are older that they understand the blanket is cutting off their airflow and they need to pull the blanket away from their nose and mouth.  Therefore, although rare, babies can suffocate due to their baby blanket.  This is why safety organizations recommend using swaddle blankets or sleep sacks for baby sleep time.
However, this does not mean you will not need a blanket for your baby.  One safe way of using a blanket in the crib with a sleeping baby is to be sure you tuck the blanket under the baby’s arms.  Don’t put the blanket over your baby’s arms because then when your baby moves his/her arms the blanket will also move about and maybe will be thrown over your baby’s face.  You can also secure your baby in a sleep sack or swaddle and then use a blanket as an extra layer over your baby.  A swaddle especially will contain your baby’s arms therefore negating the risk that your baby will pull the blanket over his/her head.  And of course you will also want blankets for padding during playtime on the floor and for all the above mentioned situations: stroller, car seat, etc…  They are also fine for afternoon naps when you are keeping an eye on your baby.  For longer sleeps, like the night sleep, when you won’t be around to watch the baby (you’ll probably be sleeping too) you may want to look into using a sleep sack or a swaddle blanket.

Definitely Swaddle

Swaddling is actually a very old fashioned way of blanketing your baby that has in recent years made a triumphant reemergence in the Western world.  Swaddling is a special way of wrapping your baby in a blanket, limiting your baby’s arm and leg movements, and recreating the cozy feel of the womb.  Many babies find swaddling extremely comforting and reassuring and immediately fall asleep after being swaddled.
My daughter had a lot of trouble sleeping when she was a baby.  She would constantly flail her arms and legs about in her sleep and these spastic movements almost always woke her up, often only minutes after falling asleep.  However, once awake she became confused thinking she had napped and was often impossible to put back to sleep again.  However, because she was not well rested she was extremely cranky and irritable and would cry and cry until we finally managed to get her back to sleep (sometimes hours later), often to only go through the same routine a few minutes later.

Swaddle Bliss

Then I discovered the Swaddle.  When I knew it was time for my daughter to take a nap (you’ll get to know the signs) I would swaddle her in a special swaddle blanket with prepositioned Velcro to make the whole process very simple for me, and then give her a bottle or a breast, or just rock her, and wait for her to fall asleep.  She would just about finish her feeding when her eyes would begin to close.  I would continue to hold her and rock her for another few minutes to make sure deep sleep had set in and then place my daughter in her crib.  Now, pre-swaddle this would be the time when my daughter’s active limbs would wake her up.  However, with the swaddle she just slept peacefully.  When swaddled she would take naps that would last anywhere from 40 minutes to 2 hours.  When she awoke she was well rested, in a good mood, and ready to play.

When decorating your nursery baby crib bedding plays a crucial role.  What color will your baby’s sheets be?  Does the crib bumper have some interesting patterns or textures to keep your baby entertained in the crib?  Does the crib bedding match other accessories sold by the manufacturer that will compliment the bedding and complete your nursery’s look?  Since your crib bedding will also fit most toddler beds you will want to choose something that can be used as your baby ages and that is made of a quality material that will last several years and thousands of washes.  I personally also like bedding with different textures to give the baby something to touch and explore while awake in the crib.

Swaddle Blankets

Swaddle blankets (aka miracle blankets in my vocabulary) are perhaps the best thing you can purchase to help you survive the early months with your new baby.  Swaddle blankets are blankets that are wrapped securely around your baby’s entire body, restricting the movement of your baby’s arms and legs.  These blankets help to create the cozy feel of the womb and also prevent your baby from spastically moving his/her arms and legs causing your baby to wake up from sleep before he/she is well rested.  Also, since swaddle blankets fit securely around your baby’s body they help to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) which can be caused by loose bedding that your baby accidently pulls over his/her face and head.  They can also be used in conjunction with baby blankets since the restriction of the arms prevents your baby from pulling and grabbing the blanket or any other loose bedding.

Sleep Sacks

Sleep sacks were invented as an alternative to baby blankets to help prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) while your baby is asleep in the crib.  Baby’s can move around a lot in their sleep and when doing so may accidently pull any loose bedding over the face or head, restricting the flow of oxygen.  This can lead to SIDS.  Sleep sacks are like sleeping bags for babies that keep your baby secure and warm while eliminating the need for any loose bedding in the crib.

Baby blankets, although not often used for crib sleeping anymore, are still necessary items when purchasing bedding for any baby.  Baby blankets have a multitude of uses and most parents find they will need several of these cozy cloths for their baby.
