If you are buying or replacing your Changing Tables so you should read this and then start to buy Changing Tables which is best for your baby and suitable for baby room.

Since you can expect to change approximately 2,000 diapers in your baby’s first year alone, you will definitely want to look into purchasing a changing table.  This is one of the essential items you will need to make those many diaper changes as painless (for you) as possible.

Changing Tables And Changing Pads

For parents with spacious nurseries, you can purchase a freestanding changing table, one that does not also function as a dresser.  This kind of changing table has a top surface for diaper changing and usually comes with two lower selves for storage.  Here you can store the diaper cream, diapers, baby wipes, burp clothes, bibs, and extra changes of clothing.  To make the table super comfortable and safe for your baby you should then purchase a contoured changing pad (if one doesn’t come with your changing table).  These pads are usually made of a thick foam lining (so that your baby isn’t lying on the hard surface of the changing table) that is covered with a waterproof vinyl.  Great for easy cleanup during those messy diaper changes.  Some companies even produce changing pads with PVC free vinyl.  You can also purchase special changing pad covers to make the pad extra soft and cozy against your baby’s skin.  Check out our review articles to find out more.

Diaper Changing Safety

Changing pads are designed with high-walled sides to help prevent your baby from rolling too much from one side or the other.  They also come with a safety strap that securely fastens around your baby’s middle.  Most changing pads also come with special safety fastening straps that can be used to secure the changing pad to the changing table or dresser.  These straps help to prevent your baby from falling off the changing table during diaper changes. However, you should never just depend on these changing pad safety features.  Never leave your baby unattended on the changing table and always have one hand on your baby to prevent your baby from rolling and falling off the table.

Changing Dressers

For parents with limited space it is worth looking into purchasing a changing dresser.  These are dressers that also function as changing tables.  They usually come with security bars around the top of the dresser (sometimes removable so you can just use the piece as a dresser when you no longer need it to function as a changing table) to help prevent your baby from rolling off.  Just like with regular changing tables you should buy a changing pad to make the changing surface of the dresser more comfortable for your baby.  If you prefer not to purchase a changing pad you can instead purchase a changing table/dresser cover that is like a special fitted sheet with elastic sides that can go over the surface of the table or dresser providing a nice surface for your baby to lie during diaper changes.

You can also use a regular dresser or table as a makeshift changing table.  Just make sure the item you choose is between 36-43 inches tall.  This will make the changes more comfortable on your back.  You can even buy a special changing table removable tray that provides high walls and added security for your baby on the dresser’s surface.
