Baby Clothing
How much clothing will your really need to purchase for your baby? Well, the answer to this really depends on how often you do laundry and whether or not you own a dryer or need to line-hang your clothes to dry. However, you should count on having days where you will change your baby up to five times before evening (thanks to lots of spit up, leaky diapers, and accidents during diaper changes). So make sure you are prepared.Baby Clothing |
What Baby Clothing To Buy?
Most people will tell you that it is not worth purchasing newborn size clothing as babies are either born bigger than that size or will outgrow the size in just a matter of weeks. You are better off just purchasing size 0-3 months instead. Of course, if you have a premature baby or an underweight baby then the newborn size or even a preemie size will work for you. However, for most new parents this clothing size isn’t worth purchasing. When thinking about how much clothing to buy, you should make a list of how much of each type of clothing you want. It’s a good idea to make this list because it is very easy to get carried away in the store and purchase too much baby clothing. But, let’s face it, baby clothing is so adorable—how can we resist?
Also, I recommend for the early months purchasing lots of sleep n’ plays, which are one piece body suits with snaps down the front. When your baby is young and you are inexperienced at dressing him quickly and efficiently, this is an easy way to get him dressed. Later, after you have mastered the art of dressing your baby, you can have fun with all of the other varieties of baby clothing available. If your baby is born in the winter, or if you live in a very cold climate, you will need to dress your baby in layers. This means you should dress your baby in a long sleeve body suit under the sleep n’ play to keep him warm.
When dressing your baby after baby bath during the first few months remember: Your baby will always need one layer more than you. So if you are good in a tee shirt then your baby needs a tee shirt and a jumper/jacket/sweatshirt, unless it is extremely hot and then your baby is also probably best off in short sleeves, or even in just a diaper.
Baby Clothing Purchase List
A minimal basic clothing shopping list to get you started:- 5-10 sleep n’ plays (light cotton material for warmer weather and fleece or terry cloth for winter)
- 10 onsies —long sleeve and short sleeve (depends on the season and climate) and I recommend buying one pack of inexpensive, plain white cotton onsies that can be used under a sleep n’ play or any other item of clothing as an extra layer.
- 5-6 pairs of pants to put over the onsies (try to buy pants with feet if available—not easy to find but worth purchasing if you can since socks often fall off babies)
